A City Dream: An Interactive Community Workshop is inspired by A City Dream, the 2025 picture book by B. Sharise Moore and illustrated by Trudi-Ann Hemans. After a read a loud of the book, the workshop asks students to visit four “dream stations” that introduce different ways to improve their neighborhoods. Dream stations include reimagining city structures through blocks and story, identifying and providing feedback to city council members, puppet theater, and mural on canvas creation.
Dream Station 1: Urban Planning with Blocks
Students can use the provided blocks to build and arrange their own city structures including residential areas, parks, and government buildings. Students will also discuss how to place and prioritize city infrastructure.
Dream Station 2: A City Dream Collaborative Word Wall
Workshop attendees will use giant post it notes to create a collaborative word wall which finishes the statement: Sometimes, my neighborhood feels…
Dream Station 3: Social Justice Puppet Theater
Workshop attendees will use puppet theater to resolve low level neighborhood conflict scenarios.
Dream Station 4: A City Dream Mural on Canvas
Workshop attendees will use the provided tempera paint sticks and canvas materials to create their own murals. Each mural can be taken home.
