A City Dream: An Interactive Community Workshop is inspired by A City Dream, the 2025 picture book by B. Sharise Moore and illustrated by Trudi-Ann Hemans. After a read a loud of the book, the workshop asks students to visit five “dream stations” that introduce different ways to improve their neighborhoods. Dream stations include reimagining city structures through Lego and story, identifying and providing feedback to city council members, puppet theater, and mural on canvas creation.
Dream Station 1: Urban Planning with Lego
- Students can use the provided Lego bricks to build and arrange their own city structures including buildings, fountains, and parks. Attendees will also be asked to prioritize city structures such as schools, museums, residences, transportation hubs, and retail spaces.
- Students will also discuss how to place and prioritize city infrastructure.
Dream Station 2: A City Dream Collaborative Word Wall
- Workshop attendees will use giant post it notes to create a collaborative word wall which finishes the statement: Sometimes, my neighborhood feels…
Dream Station 3: Find Your Representative
- Workshop attendees will access Maryland County and Baltimore City Websites to identify their city/county councilperson via previously created QR codes. Then, attendees will have the option to email or write questions and concerns to their city/county councilperson. A template will be available.
Dream Station 4: Social Justice Sock Puppets
Workshop attendees will use sock puppets and puppet theater to resolve low level neighborhood conflict scenarios.
Dream Station 5: A City Dream Mural on Canvas
- Workshop attendees will use the provided paint and canvas materials to create their own murals. Each mural can be taken home.
