This summer, the exterior of Morrell Park Elementary/Middle School was abuzz with children working on a colorful mural with the guidance of Access Art’s artist McKinley Wallace.  Together, the school and local communities decided on an idea for the mural that reflected the school’s mission and practice- S.O.A.R. (being safe, organized, attentive, and respectful).  The school’s Principal, Nichelle Johnson, believes that “it takes a community to develop a whole child” and that idea is what influenced the Impact Fund Project proposal last Winter.  Together with Access Art, a local after school organization, students, teachers, and community members weighed in on a design that depicts the school’s motto “SOAR” within the silhouette of the school’s mascot, the eagle.  The mural was completed last week and an official unveiling will be held within the next few weeks.

We see the mural as an opportunity for the community to come together and create something extraordinary for our kids to enjoy.
