Storytelling in the Classroom: Drama and Reader’s Theatre (Elementary)

In this residency a professional teaching artist will be paired with a specific classroom/teacher. Initially, the teaching artist will work on community-building and collaboration through various drama strategies and theatre games within the class. The teaching artist will further engage students through drama by exploring a chosen Reader’s Theatre script. This piece could be a multicultural fairy tale or myth for example, that connects with the chosen grade level curriculum in Language Arts (genre, literacy) or other appropriate subjects. The script can be chosen with the classroom teacher. Readers Theater is an integrated approach for involving students in reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities.  It involves children in sharing literature, reading aloud, performing with a purpose, and working collaboratively.
