Some of the most famous myths are journey myths, in which a character must go on a quest and face many obstacles. In the end, they learn something new about themselves. Jason and the Argonauts, the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh, even the movie Star Wars–all are journey myths. This unique one-day hybrid assembly/workshop program offers an exciting and interactive introduction to this classic mythological form. Students first watch a recording of professional teaching artist Seth Reichgott performing Jason and the Golden Fleece. Then they participate in a short online workshop where they learn to create their own journey myths, using theatrical techniques and simple writing prompts. It’s an immersive exploration of theatre, writing, and ancient storytelling that leaves each student with their own myth outline they can use for future writing and performance.
This program can be tailored to fit your school’s specific needs. It can be presented to one grade level, the entire school can watch the recorded performance and then only selected classes can do the workshop, etc.
