To arrange a dance performance, music must be prepared so that it has the right number of beats for a specific choreography, and must end in a way that sounds “finished.” Calculations on how to do this can be made by students. This enables them to see how math plays into performance preparation.
In this lesson, students can be introduced to a few moves, count the beats in each, and then figure out how they would choreograph a presentation using those moves to music.
The cost of the program depends on the precise details worked out for how it is to be done–in person on live online or via pre-recorded video.
In addition, for high school students, a program that includes instruction on a group dance that is done by a circle of couples can be taught. Then principles of circle geometry can be discussed including mention of central angles, arcs of the circle, tangents to a circle, points of tangency, formulas of a circle such as that for the perimeter, etc.
The Danceintime dance company provides programming on arts integration that blends math and dance. Members of the team are available to run these fun programs at schools, at a Danceintime venue as a field trip, or online.
