Japanese Performance Techniques for an Advanced High School Ensemble

This six-week intensive is aimed at exposing advanced students to a Japanese form of performance, which deviates from the traditional western model taught in schools. The classes will be divided into two sections: theoretical discussion and body practicum. In the first two sessions, we will begin conversations on specific topics such as Zen practices, historical evolution, the generation of new work, personal experiences, and methodology. The final four sessions will be spent introducing physical language into the dialogue through a series of ritualized movements and gestures. The intention is not to instill the postures in the body, but to begin flavoring the mind to new arenas of expression. Students will explore presence, centering, a performers discipline, as well as vocal and physical strength. The exercises are rigorous and students should expect to sweat. Each session runs an hour in length. Students should wear clothing to move in: no spaghetti straps, jeans, heavy jewelry, or tight bands please. Students should bring water and a journal to record observations.
