This long-term residency is a way for an experienced class or ensemble of high school players to delve deeper into their collective interests and produce an innovative and engaging 20 minute play using mask, clown and devising in physical theatre techniques. The work will require actors to take complete agency in the creative work as actor/creators for the stage, taking upon themselves the roles of actors, authors, designers and cultural investigators. The spine of the work will be a story that is agreed upon by the class and its drama teacher before the residency begins. During the course of the residency, we will create masks for the show, train and build the ensemble, develop characters through improvisation and playwriting, and research the use of gesture and dynamic play to explode the story with their unique points of view. This process is remarkably empowering and puts the student’s learning in her own capable hands. Students will have the opportunity to keep the mask they make.
