In this engaging presentation, we will explore the development of a dynamic street art unit tailored for students in grades 3 through 12, with a special focus on the vibrant murals and artistic expressions found throughout Baltimore’s diverse neighborhoods. Educators will learn how to harness the rich cultural narratives behind street art to inspire creativity and critical thinking in their classrooms. The unit emphasizes hands-on learning, where students will investigate the history and techniques of street artists, engage in discussions about community identity, and create their own mural projects that reflect their personal experiences and perspectives.

Furthermore, this unit is designed to be fully integrated with literacy and math, providing educators with robust resources and strategies to enhance cross-curricular connections. Students will engage in reading and writing activities centered around the themes of street art, while also applying mathematical concepts through measurements and scaling in their mural designs. By the end of the presentation, educators will have a comprehensive framework to implement this innovative unit, fostering not only artistic skills but also essential literacy and math competencies in a culturally relevant context.

This presentation is usually an hour though could be an add-on for a professional development for teachers where they take a tour and then receive a shorter amended version of this presentation.
