Drama Residency Program: Enhancing Literacy Through Drama (Pre-K to 2nd Grade)

Available for the 2024-2025 school year!

As an experienced educator and arts integration specialist, I am excited to offer a drama residency program that integrates theatre into literacy instruction for Pre-K to 2nd-grade students. This program will help students develop foundational literacy skills in an engaging and creative way by combining storytelling, role-playing, and dramatic play with academic content. My goal is to partner with teachers to provide a dynamic learning experience that supports language development, comprehension, and a love for reading.

This residency program will enhance students’ literacy skills by:

  • Boosting Comprehension: Through role-playing and reenacting stories, students will explore characters, settings, and plot structures, deepening their understanding of the text.
  • Expanding Vocabulary: Acting out stories and using expressive language helps students encounter new words in meaningful contexts, improving retention and usage.
  • Encouraging Oral Language Skills: Drama encourages students to speak confidently, listen actively, and communicate clearly, laying the foundation for reading fluency.
  • Promoting Social-Emotional Learning: By stepping into different roles, students build empathy and understanding, key components for engaging with diverse texts and perspectives.

Why This Program is Beneficial:

  • Engagement: Drama activities capture the attention of young learners who might otherwise struggle with traditional literacy instruction. The immersive nature of drama makes learning fun and memorable.
  • Differentiation: This program supports diverse learners, including those with special needs and English language learners, by offering multiple modes of expression—visual, verbal, and kinesthetic.
  • Collaboration: Teachers are actively involved in the planning and execution of lessons, ensuring that the drama activities align with their literacy goals and curriculum standards.

By integrating drama into literacy lessons, we can help students build essential reading and communication skills in an exciting and developmentally appropriate way. I look forward to working closely with teachers to tailor the program to meet the unique needs of their students, ensuring that every child can benefit from this creative and impactful learning experience.
