Participants are simultaneously introduced to the Abayomi-style (AH-Bah-Yo-Mee) legacy doll-making technique, Sustainable Fashion and an immersive, hands-on experience in a “screen free” environment designed to activate their creativity.
Abayomi: A Yoruba (YORR-Ru-Bah) word meaning “precious meeting” or “brings Joy.” Between 40-50 million Yorubans inhabit an area in West African that spans southwestern Nigeria, eastern Benin, and northern Togo.
Legend has it that during the middle passage of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, captured women would tear pieces of their own garments and using knots and string, fashioned them into dolls and were given to children to bring them joy!
As part of an homage to the ancestors, and an act of sustainability, this workshop led by Sehar Peerzada uses scraps of fabric to create a version of this legendary doll, constructed without any sewing. Participants may bring their own scraps or use ours!
