Art Educator Andrea Sauer specializes in using art as a healing modality and will lead students through sessions of active listening with their peers, creating a safe space for feeling valued and heard. This hand selected group (often teachers and counselors can refer students that may have suffered loss) of 10-12 students will participate in conversations rooted in mindfulness and ways to be aware of our perspectives and how to shift our perspective to gratitude and seek out the things that bring us joy and stability amidst challenges.
Students will design and create a plexiglass panel that can be hung easily inside a window within the school. Shapes and designs that relect the ideas we’ve talked about will be cut from colored cellophane and adhered to the plexiglass. The size and shape of the plexiglass will be decided with the artist and teacher liason to best suit the school it will be installed in. Not only are the students learning mindfulness and different techniques to ground their nervous systems but they are learning how to collaborate, be risk-takers (creativity cannot exist without risk), create visual language to communicate ideas, abstract thinking skills, math (measuring), science (how the idea perceives color and how light works) and color theory and mixing.
