Kente Weaving & Pattern Design: Visual Math in African Textiles

Explore the intersection of mathematics, West African history, and textile design through the art of Ghanaian Kente weaving. In this hands-on S.T.E.A.M. workshop, students discover how traditional Ashanti royal weavers use visual patterns, geometric sequences, symmetry, and color symbolism to encode proverbs, historical events, and visual narratives into fabric.
Guided by West African heritage and mathematical principles, participants build their own paper or yarn cardboard looms to weave a customized Kente-inspired textile strip or tapestry, applying intentional color choices and geometric pattern repetitions to tell their own personal stories.
