Creative Dramatics: Arts Integration Into Language Arts (Elementary School)

In this residency a professional teaching artist will be paired with a specific classroom/teacher. Initially, the teaching artist will work on community-building and collaboration through various drama strategies and theatre games within the class. The teaching artist will collaborate with the classroom teacher to implement arts integrated learning opportunities in support of the core language arts curriculum. Using the classroom teachers chosen literature, the teaching artist will explore and engage the stories through dramatic play activities that involve movement, music, and storytelling (with fun costumes and props, of course!). Specific content can be developed at the discretion of the classroom teacher and the teaching artist with regard to the specific class’s needs. The teaching artist will facilitate drama/literacy learning opportunities, the classroom teacher will gain practical experience on how to sustain such practices in their classroom, and the students gain access to learning through and about the arts, as well as witnessing two educators model successful co-teaching, promoting life skills like negotiation, problem solving and team work.

*This model can be adapted for any core-subject, Science, Social Studies, etc. Given a chosen unit or theme, original curriculum can be created with the classroom teacher in support of his or her plans.
