Masks and Emotions: Character Education through Drama (Elementary)

Using physical theatre techniques and 9 original Commedia dell‘Arte masks to portray 9 human emotions, we provide children with the tools to recognize emotional cues in others. Students work together to explore movement and shape that express specific emotional states, and discuss potential causes for these fictitious emotional experiences. They will create characters with large emotions on stage through individual physical exploration in movement and gesture and shape; they will work in pairs for some exercises, and practice skills in critical observation. By removing “MY emotion” and applying critical observation of the shapes of their peers in this work, students can grow greater emotional intelligence and empathy for their experience and those of others.
