Rae Hample – Adventures in Animation

Have you ever taken so many pictures at once, that when you scroll through them, they look like they’re moving? From Wallace and Gromit to LEGO movies, animators have told many stories through paper, clay, and pixelation. Students will explore ways of manipulating puppets to tell their own stories, one frame at a time. Students will progress from flip books to cut paper to explore ways to use images and puppets to tell their own stories, one frame at a time.

This four- to five-day residency will teach the history and technique of stop motion animation—a filmmaking technique using frame-by-frame photography to create a moving image. Students will explore how to express complex ideas through object manipulation and character development. This program has the potential to connect to many academic subjects, including language arts (ex., Working with literacy standards to explore symbolism in a text), science (ex., animating weather patterns), math (animating multiplication equations), and social studies (ex. animating historical events). It can also connect to explorations of identity or community.
