Since 2006, Baltimore Jazz Alliance’s Jazz for Kids (JFK) program has introduced jazz music to children and youth in schools, libraries, community centers, museums and camps as a community service in the greater Baltimore-Washington region. Our programs can be tailored for age groups 5 and up. “What Is Jazz?” is an interactive, family-oriented presentation by a 5-piece band, featuring jazzy versions of well-known children’s songs and simple jazz classics including Latin styles. JFK is an audio/visual presentation that can be offered live or virtually. A presentation of the history and music of some iconic jazz composers/performers is included. Participants can also participate in a New Orleans-style musical parade and are invited to scat sing with our vocalist. We also offer an optional music instrument “Petting Zoo” in which students may try a variety of instruments.
Band members include Rhonda Robinson (vocalist), Philip Ravita (bass), Bob
Jacobson (sax, clarinet), Greg Small (piano), and Russell Hayward III
(drums). References are available upon request.
