The Highlandtown Mural Tour offers a rich and engaging 2-hour walking experience through one of Baltimore’s most culturally diverse and artistically vibrant neighborhoods. This tour highlights the area’s unique tradition of painted screens, a beloved local folk art that turns rowhouse windows into colorful street-facing canvases, showcasing the creativity rooted in everyday life. Students will also explore powerful large-scale murals by nationally acclaimed artists such as native american Gregg Deal, whose work centers on Indigenous identity and social justice, and Michael Owen, creator of the “Baltimore Love Project,” whose murals bring messages of unity and empathy to the city’s streets, as well as Rowan Bathurst who is a newcomer on the Baltimore Mural scene bringing vibrancy and contemporary portrayal of BIPOC subjects. As students walk through the Highlandtown Arts & Entertainment District, they’ll learn how public art reflects and shapes community identity, history, and activism. Perfect for educators seeking a field trip that ties together visual art, cultural studies, and social awareness, this tour invites students to engage deeply with Baltimore’s evolving artistic landscape while celebrating the voices and stories that define Highlandtown.
